Phoenix Taekwondo adventure to the 8th Open World Championships in Birmingham turned out to be a major success, boasting 4 new world Champions, 1 silver and 4 bronze from 13 students
The success started on day one with the colour belts, the first came from Christine Jess, current Irish and Scottish Champion, pulled out the performance of a life time to win a big category. Kevin Scoular, who had been successful in more local based competitions, worked hard and determined and Matt Ainsworth with very strong and determined performances.
Next was the turn of the Black Belts, in the ladies division Kirsty Izat, followed up here European 2006 Gold with hard fought silver in the ladies heavy weight final. In the men’s Flyweight division where there was high hopes of Allan Lusk bringing home the Gold, he fought with real skill and desire and although everyone though he won his semi-final, the decision went to English fighter and had to settle for the 3rd place position.
Day two started the same way day one had finished, with young Greg Dunlop winning Gold in the boys yellow belt lightweight division, his club mate and team mate Alan Roy followed this success in the boys red belt heavyweight division. He met a hard hitting Dutch competitor in the final, but won by a clear five points by the time the fight was over.
Next was the turn of James Reed, the current British champion, he fought well, but had to settle for 3rd place which equalled his last outing at a World Championship.
The men’s Scottish Black belt international team had Allan Lusk fighting up one weight category at Lightweight and Kuli Chahal at Heavyweight. The national team were unlucky not to have made it to an England Scotland final as the Scots were narrowly beaten by a strong Polish team in the semi-finals.
